টেনিস তো বটেই, সমগ্র ক্রীড়াজগতে উইম্বলডনের অন্যরকম মর্যাদা। কিন্তু গত ৭৫ বছরে যা হয়নি, করোনাভাইরাসের ধাক্কায় এবার তাই হল। দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধের পর এই প্রথম বাতিল হয়ে গেল ঐতিহ্যবাহী উইম্বলডনের কোনো আসর। গতকাল বুধবার এই ঘোষণা দিয়েছে আয়োজক কর্তৃপক্ষ অল ইংল্যান্ড ক্লাব।

অন্যসব ক্রীড়া আসরগুলো যখন একে একে স্থগিত করা হচ্ছে তখন উইম্বলডন কর্তৃপক্ষ সে পথে হাঁটেনি। আসরটি তারা একেবারে বাতিলই করে দিয়েছে।
সময়সূচি অনুযায়ী, উইম্বলডনের এবারের আসর অনুষ্ঠিত হওয়ার কথা ছিল ২৯ জুন থেকে ১২ জুলাই পর্যন্ত। বাতিল করে আয়োজক কর্তৃপক্ষ তাদের বিবৃতিতে বলেছে, ‘সিদ্ধান্তটি নিতে আমাদের বেশ কষ্ট হয়েছে। কিন্তু কোনো উপায় ছিল না। বিশ্বের এখন যে পরিস্থিতি তাতে জনস্বাস্থ্যের বিষয়টি আমরা হালকাভাবে নিতে পারি না।’
এ বছরের আসর বাতিল করার সঙ্গে সঙ্গে পরবর্তী আসরের তারিখও জানিয়ে দিয়েছে কর্তৃপক্ষ। ২০২১ সালে উইম্বলডনের ১৩৪ তম আসর শুরু হবে ২৮ জুন থেকে, চলবে ১১ জুলাই পর্যন্ত।
